2020 is the year to relocate to Crete

Happy New Year 2020!

Frédéric Boissonnas 1911 Omalos Plateau

2020 would be the year of opportunities. Good time to relocate. World is changing, so I bet it's better to be at the center of the globe.

Well it depends from where you are looking. The view is excellent, however just think about it. Crete is the center of the world, or at least it was at the Minoan empire era. Don't get me wrong. Crete is always beautiful, all seasons and almost everyone wants to live there.

Today we present a terrific property on sale, which is called Rizomata Lakon, (Greek: Ριζώματα Λάκκων). Lakki is the last village you meet before you reach Omalos Plateau, which is the start for the Samarian gorge. This beautiful real estate property at the center of Chania perfecture has a fantastic view. The distance to Chania Airport (CHQ) is 25 klm.

If you would like to see the area in Google Maps just search for Crete, Lakki 73005.

The land for sale is 6,000 m2 which allows you to build around 240 m2 in a compact building, or separate rooms to rent. It contains 80 olive trees that they are around 50 years old.

Lakkoi is located in Chanea, Kreta.

Lakkoi (Greek: Λάκκοι), commonly spelled Lakki on road signs and maps, is a village on the Greek island of Crete in the foothills of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains).

The village is situated on the road between Chania and the plateau of Omalos which leads to the Samaria Gorge.[wiki] Time zone UTC+2 (EET)  • Summer (DST) UTC+3 (EEST)

Elevation is 450 metres high, (1,480 ft). Lakki are below the White Mountains which rise another 1,000 metres to the south.

Gigilos, the highest peak of the white mountains.

Lakki is today a municipal district of the Municipality of Mousouroi, Platanias, Chania. They are located in the center and west of Chania Prefecture at the foot of the White Mountains near the Omalos Plateau and the Samaria Gorge. Most of the houses cling to steep slopes covered in olive and chestnut trees, reached through narrow roads or tracks that run down from the main square.

In the early 20th century, Lakkoi was the seat of a municipality, the municipality which included the villages of Lakkoi, Karanou, Orthouni and Hebron. A report of 16 April 1898 the population was 13071 (Chatzi Michali Giannari Archives, Historical Archive of Crete Volume III).

With limited work opportunities, the population has declined from a peak of around 2,000 at the middle of the 20th century to less than 2,00 today. They are engaged in agriculture, livestock farming and of course tourism.

The climate is cool in winter, with occasional snow, wet in spring, hot and dry in the summer. Prior to the major brush fires broke out twice of 2003 and 2007, there were 120,000 perennial olive trees, around Lakkoi, most of which were planted from the Venetians and produced large quantities of olive oil. After the fires, less than 20,000 trees are left.

Livestock farmers are struggling to cope with the needs of life so traditionally they are cultivating olives and raise goats, sheep and chickens..

Tourists visit the place for hiking in the mountains paths of the White Mountains, or to cross the famous Samaria Gorge (six hours to walk). Its beginning is located in the Omalos Plateau.
There are signs of growth as houses are being purchased and renovated by citizens of other European Union countries, seeking low-cost retirement or vacation homes. Many tourists park their vehicles there to start the Samaria gorge hike. There are a few places to stay near Samaria Gorge. Just about 10 families are involved in tourism in small hotel businesses in Omalos and Lakos.
